It felt as though they were all looking at her, everyone in the bar, surely everyone here must know she had been stood up. A man she didnt know was watching her from the other end of the room, making her feel even more uneasy. Maybe it would be better to leave.
She concentrated on the remains of her drink, refusing to meet the strangers eye, swirling the ice in the glass.
"Amy?"
The familiar voice behind her made her jump. Finally hed arrived. She turned on the spot, with a smile, and looked him over in appreciation. Chris, a man shed met just the night before, giving out her phone number but never really expecting a call. Hed surprised her by telephoning that morning, begging to be allowed to meet for a drink. Amy felt slightly ashamed at being so eager, but they were in a public place, what harm could it do?
He nodded towards her glass.
"What are you drinking?"
And, after ordering for both of them, he led her to a table in the corner of the room.

Later in the evening Amy was begining to feel a lot more relaxed about their meeting. Chris seemed genuinely interested in getting to know her, asking many questions about her life, her interests and her work. She liked the way his eyes met hers confidently, as though he was drinking in every word and commiting it to memory. They had chatted at length about places they each liked to visit, agreeing that another date would be nice, in a restaurant they both loved. This date wasnt yet over and already she was excited about the next.

But it was getting late, and sooner or later it would be time to leave.
