We were having one of the worst thunderstorms we had had in a long time. Suddenly there was a knock on the door, I wasnt expecting anyone so I looked out the window before opening it. It was Dem, my boss for my 2nd job and friend. I could tell by the look on his face that something was wrong so I opened the door and hurried him in from the rain.
He was soaking wet so I offered him a towel and we sat down on the couch, I asked him what he was doing out in the rain on a night like this. He told me that his wife had asked him to leave and it was finally over. The love had been long gone from their marriage and he had wanted out for a long time but would not ask for a divorce. But now it was over for real, I guess he was in disbelief.
I first met Dem through work, I was a 911 dispatcher and he was a Detective with one of the local police departments. We got along from the moment we met, for a long time we only talked at work but then I started working with him on the side for his carpet cleaning business. After that, we became good friends, I knew that if I ever needed anything he would be there to help the best he could. Often we would just vent to each other about different things, me about work or whoever I was dating at the time and he about how the love was non-existent in his marriage.
He had been married for almost 20 years to someone he considered a friend and business partner more than a lover. There was no intimacy at all between them.
